The problem

Salty water brought up by some geothermal wells contains lithium, a battery ingredient. An electrically controlled electrode can take up lithium and then release it into a separate liquid. Can larger electrodes keep selecting lithium after long use with hot, dirty brine?[1] [2]

Scope

Electrochemical geothermal-brine extraction: scalable electrode manufacture and long-term capacity and selectivity in cells exposed to hot feeds, foulants and mineral scaling.

What remains open

Success with a synthetic feed does not establish long life in real brine.[2]

Why it matters

Geothermal brines could add another source of lithium for batteries. But an electrode that needs frequent replacement can make recovery expensive. Reliable capture and release would help turn a promising feedstock into a continuing supply.[1] [2]

Definitions

3 terms
brine

Water containing a high concentration of dissolved salts. The geothermal brines discussed here contain lithium alongside other dissolved ions and potential foulants.[1] [2]

lithium selectivity

How strongly the extraction process favors lithium over competing ions, such as sodium. High selectivity helps keep those other ions out of the recovered stream.[2]

mineral scaling

Mineral deposits forming on equipment. Such deposits can interfere with an extraction electrode during repeated use.[2]
