The problem
Some cosmic flashes brighten and fade quickly in blue visible light, while also shining strongly in X-rays and radio. AT2018cow, nicknamed the Cow, is one example. What stellar event starts these flashes, and what powers all their emission? A black hole or dense stellar remnant may supply energy without yet explaining how the event began.[1] [2]
AT2018cow was a transient, a temporary cosmic flash, that brightened and faded rapidly in blue optical light and emitted strong X-rays and radio. Which stellar histories create such events, and how do they produce all those signals? The central engine is the ongoing energy source; the progenitor history is the sequence that brought it into being.
These questions can remain separate. A compact object gaining material can power emission without identifying whether collapse, an encounter or a merger supplied it. In AT2024wpp, published models were fitted to optical, radio and X-ray light curves. A fit that reproduced some features still missed others, including their evolution over time.[1] [2]
Scope
The progenitors and power sources of Cow-like luminous fast blue optical transients with strong high-energy and radio emission.
What remains open
Why it matters
These flashes may reveal unusual ways stars create compact remnants or feed existing ones. Their changing light gives access to that history while the event is unfolding.[1]
Definitions

Transient
A temporary astronomical event whose brightness changes. This page concerns the luminous fast blue optical subset with strong high-energy and radio emission.[1] [2]
